About Alton

The town of Alton was recorded in the Doomsday Survey of 1086 and was formally known as Aoltone. This lovely market town is set within the depths of the English countryside and located close to the source of the River Wey.

Most notably the town offers fantastic educational facilities including Treloar’s school which provides education for young people with physical disabilities and is located in the nearby village of Holybourne. There are also 2 fantastic secondary state schools known as Eggar’s school (formally the grammar school), and Amery Hill School. Alton Convent school is a private independent catholic day school which educates boys 3-11 and girls 3-18 and sixth form education is provided by Alton College, which has gained outstanding inspection reports from Ofsted.

Alton offers a fast regular service through to Waterloo in just over the hour, stopping at the nearby village of Bentley, Farnham, Aldershot, Ash Vale, Brookwood, Woking, Surbiton and terminating at London Waterloo.

There are a number of highly desirable villages located on the fringes of Alton, Chawton being notable for its links with Jane Austen.
